Asphalt is strategically engineered and composed of about 95% stone, sand & gravel by weight and about 5% asphalt cement that act's like glue to hold the pavement together. It can be said that asphalt has been and still remains one of
the major building blocks of our Nation. The United States of America has over 2 million mile's of roads & highway's and over 93% of them are surfaced with asphalt pavement employing thousands of people every year for maintenance and new construction.
NEW CONSTRUCTION AND EXCAVATION
Home owners and commercial parking lots some time need to add more area for extra parking, we call this a fresh cut or a new dig out's, when adding these new area's we look at feasibility of the project not only does it have to drain properly it has to be functional and after looking at the site and determining that the area can be turned into additional parking, road, roadway or ect., we will then start on the excavation by removing dirt and soil to a depth of usually 6-8 inch's in some situation's we have to dig deeper. We install a sub-base that consists of #2's or #4's and then 4-6 inch's of # 304 limestone base rock compacting the appropriate size compactor for the job. GRADE & PAVE ON EXISTING NEW OR OLD GRAVEL SURFACE'S
Most all new or old gravel driveways and parking lot's will need to be graded, leveled and sloped for proper drainage. Some surface's have the wrong type of rock and is not a proper base #8's & #57's are a washed finishing stone that will not compact. If there is to much loose stone on top it will need to be scraped off and hauled away, we then bring in additional #304 limestone base rock and spread it as needed roll and compact. Apply a pramitol weed killer to gravel area then string line and paint out a guide for new blacktop installation with a 2 ½ inch layer of 404 finishing course hot mix blacktop rolled and compact to a hard smooth finish with all edge's being hand tamped at a 45 degree angle for strong clean edge's. (NOTE) commercial job's are 2 inch's of 402 base course hot mix blacktop and a second layer of 404 finishing course hot mix blacktop.
ASPHALT OVERLAY'S & RE-CAP'S
As asphalt starts to age and deteriorate it becomes necessary for a new layer of asphalt (overlay/re-cap) this process extends the life of the parking lot or driveway with the old surface becoming the new base this can be done as long as the old asphalt pavement is still in reasonably sound condition, most case's we have to do some dig out and asphalt repair work, here is an example of what may need to be done
Asphalt Overlay & Resurfacing
1.Using hydraulic sweeper's and high powered air blowers clean and remove all loose debris from surface.
2. To allow for a smooth transition after the overlay and allow for proper drainage it may be necessary to grind down along transition points, handicap ramps, dumpster pad's, catch basin's, entrance way's and exit's ect.
Excavations and Repairs before Overlay
1. Remove
badly cracked and alligatored section's in surface, check the base for
soft or clay area's if found dig out and remove 6-8 inch's
2. Install #304 base rock and compact if needed.
3. Install 3 inch's
of compacted #402 base course hot mix asphalt
Overlay
1. Remove parking bumper's (if any).
2. Apply an S.S.1.H tack coat
to entire surface for bonding new asphalt to old.
** IMPORTANT
** - To help insure a level finished surface it may be necessary
to do a leveling-scratch course to low lying and uneven areas as
needed. This can not guarantee the elimination of low spots but will
greatly reduce them.
3. Pave spread on 1 ½ inch's of compacted #404
finish course hot mix asphalt.
4. Re-install parking bumpers (if
needed).
5. Lay out & re-stripe all lines, arrow, handicap's ect. (if needed).
